The Root Canal Treatment Process

01

Diagnosis

The first step in a root canal is a thorough examination of the tooth, which include X-rays and testing the nerve to determine the extent of the damage or infection. Once Dr. Sierra confirms that a root canal is necessary, she'll numb the area around your tooth with local anesthesia to keep the experience as comfortable as possible.

02

Removing the Infected Nerve

After the tooth is numb, Dr. Sierra will carefully remove the top layer of the tooth to access the nerve. Using specialized tools, she'll remove the infected or inflamed nerve and thoroughly clean out all the canals.

03

Disinfecting and Shaping

Dr. Sierra will clean and shape the empty canals, where the nerve used to be. This step is crucial to prepare the canals for the filling material. Dr. Sierra uses an antimicrobial solution to disinfect the canals thoroughly and prevent future infections.

04

Filling and Sealing

The cleaned and shaped canals are then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which is placed with an adhesive cement to completely seal the canals. Finally, a filling is placed on top to close the opening. Depending on your case, a crown may also be recommended to protect the tooth and restore its appearance.

FAQs

Have questions? We've got answers.

How long does a root canal procedure take?

A typical root canal procedure usually takes about 90 minutes, but this can vary depending on the complexity of the case. Some teeth have more roots than others, which might require more time to treat. Depending on the extent of the infection, it may take several appointments to control the infection before completing the root canal. Dr. Sierra makes sure that every step is done carefully and correctly, focusing on longlasting outcomes and your comfort throughout the procedure.

Will I feel pain during or after the procedure?

Most people are surprised to find that a root canal is much less painful than they thought. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you shouldn't feel any pain while it’s being done. After the anesthesia wears off, some mild discomfort or sensitivity is normal but typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers. Dr. Sierra will provide you with all the advice and support you need for a smooth recovery.

What should I expect after a root canal?

After a root canal, it’s normal to experience some tenderness in the area for a few days, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain medication. Dr. Sierra might recommend avoiding hard or chewy foods for a few days to keep pressure off the treated tooth. It’s important to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly, and be sure to follow up with Dr. Sierra to make sure your tooth recovers well and remains healthy.
